Nine people have died after drinking illicit brew in Kawamwaki village, Limuru, in central Kenya,
Five
more died Tuesday in similar circumstances in a village in Ikutha
district in Kitui County while scores others were admitted to hospital,
just a day after Embu residents succumbed to death after consuming the
alcohol.
Limuru deputy county commissioner Kang’ethe
Thuku and area Member of the County Assembly John Kaniaru confirmed the
deaths from the consumption of the brew suspected to have been laced
with methanol.
The Limuru victims are said to have been drinking the alcohol Monday evening in a forested area surrounded by tea farms.
According
to Ikutha medical officer of health Lucia Jonah, seven other revellers
are admitted in critical condition while 19 were treated at the nearby
dispensary and discharged after their conditions stabilised.
Two
died at the bar, one at his home while two more succumbed to stomach
complications at Mutomo Mission Hospital where they had been referred.
