Poison drinks kill 60 in five counties as more than 70 in hospital Fifty, Illicit brew kills kenyans and more than 70 others were hospitalised after drinking illicit brews

NAIROBI, KENYA: At least 70
people from Embu, Kiambu, Makueni,
Kitui and Murang'a Counties have
died since Sunday after consuming
illicit brew.
In Kiambu and Kitui Counties, 11
and six were confirmed dead
respectively while 25 died in Embu
County. Makueni county incident
claimed 12 while two perished in
Murang'a.
Kiambu County Commissioner Esther
Maina confirmed the deaths in her
county which she said begun
occurring on Sunday night.
According to Ms Maina, the victims
from Nazareth village consumed
pure methanol which was sold to
them by one of the victims David
Mungai which she said was a
notorious illicit brew dealer.
By Monday evening a suspected
brewer was already in police custody
while the entire Shauri slum in
Embu where the incident took place
was in a state of panic.
