Friday May 9, 2014 – The Kikuyu
Council of Elders has urged
President Uhuru Kenyatta to
declare illicit brew a national
disaster and channel Government
resources towards fighting the
menace especially in Central
Kenya which is affected greatly.
This comes following the deaths
of over 90 people, majority of who
were from Central, after
consuming illicit brew.
Speaking at a Nairobi Hotel on
Thursday, National Chairman of
the Kikuyu Council of Elders,
Wachira Kiago, decried rampant
abuse of illicit brews in Central
Kenya, which has killed many,
warning that if something is not
done urgently, many Kikuyus will
die and will the rest of Kenyans.
He urged Uhuru to intervene and
save Kikuyus from dying through
killer brews or else many will
continue to die and in the long
run that will affect the
community’s political dominance
to the advantage of the rival
communities.
“We can no longer watch
helplessly as damage and death
visit our children. The future of
our community is threatened both
economically, socially and
politically as many families are
disintegrated”, said Kiago.
Kiago called for an immediate
stop of brewing and sale of illicit
liquor in Central Kenya and well
as the immediate sacking of
Chiefs and their Assistants.
“The administrators have been
receiving kickbacks and often
avoid arresting brewers who are
well known to them thereby
causing unwarranted deaths”, he
said.
