KBL to introduce a low-priced brand in the market, to counter illicit brews.

Kenya: Battle for a share of the low- end alcohol market is set to go a notch higher. This follows plan by Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) to introduce a low-priced brand in the market, to counter illicit brews. While there is a ban on spirits sold in sachets, most of these brands have surfaced in rural areas where business is booming.

Senator Wamatangi Buys and Burns Hundreds of Nairobian Newspapers Copies After Rape Exposé

On Friday, the nation was shocked
by news that Kiambu Senator
Kimani Wamatangi had raped his
househelp. Standard Group owned
Nairobian Newspaper carried the
exclusive.
Here’s an excerpt from the report.
I will never forget July 8,
2006. It was my third day at
work as a househelp in the
Wamatangi household. I can
recall the exact time,
1.30pm, because I wanted to
watch a programme on
television. My boss
Wamatangi came home and
found his wife with me in
the sitting room.
He started quarrelling her,
demanding to know why she
didn’t go to work. I quickly
stepped out of the sitting
room and went to the
kitchen. I could hear them
quarrel in English. I could
gather that mzee was not
happy. After five minutes,
madam left for work, and I
was left in the house with
Wamatangi.
He then summoned me into
the living room and asked
me to bring him tea.
He asked me to sit down and
chat. I politely refused and
told him I prefer black tea
since I didn’t like milk. That
was the moment he pulled
me next to him and pushed
me onto the sofa.
I started screaming and he
slapped me on the face. He
then used his hand to cover
my mouth. I think my
screams must have attracted
the neighbour next door
because I heard someone
knock on the door, but they
soon left.
He forcefully removed my
panty and forced himself on
me. I cried bitterly. I had
never had sex. I was a virgin.
I was saved and a staunch
church member.
I don’t know how long it
lasted, but I just lay there,
in pain, and too shocked to
move.
Winfred Wangui
In a strange twist, Standard is
reporting that an outraged
Wamatangi issued instructions to
some unknown people to ensure
that the paper was “out of
circulation by close of business.”
That was on Friday.
“There is a vehicle buying the
current issue of The Nairobian off
the streets and the people in the
car have told vendors to deliver
more copies at Nyayo Stadium,” a
vendor told the paper.
This blurred out SUV was pictured
buying hundreds or maybe
thousands of copies, before
burning them.
“They were spotted buying copies
of The Nairobian in large
quantities within the CBD and
along Kiambu Road. Later on, we
saw them burning the papers near
a railway line in upper hill,” a
source said.
A group of men seen burning
copies of the newspaper at
Railways Upper Hill
That I must admit no one saw
coming.

Hassan Joho degree is genuine, says Kampala University VC

Kampala University Vice
Chancellor Prof Badru
Kateregga addresses the Press
at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi, on
May 18, 2014.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho
earned his degree from
Kampala University legitimately,
the institution's Vice
Chancellor has said.
Speaking to reporters in Nairobi
on Sunday, Prof Badru
Kateregga said Mr Joho
attended the university from
2009 to 2012.
“As far as Kampala University is
concerned, the degree awarded
to Mr Hassan Ali Joho is
bonafide, lawful and authentic.
(It) was genuinely awarded and
Kampala University Senate
cannot and will not recall,
revoke or cancel an award that
it deems to be valid, authentic
and genuinely awarded,” he
said.
The Uganda National Council
for Higher Education has
doubted the validity of Mr
Joho's degree.
“There was no clear evidence
that academic due process was
followed from admission to
graduation regarding a
Bachelor of Business
Administration degree (Human
Resource Management option)
awarded to Mr Hassan Ali Joho
by Kampala University,” the
council said in a resolution.
NCHE has said that Mr Joho
may not have been in Uganda
to physically undertake studies,
raising doubts about how the
university awarded him the
degree.
It was acting on the
recommendations of a
committee chaired by Mr S.H.
Nsubuga, which claimed that
Mr Joho “fraudulently obtained
the said qualifications from
Kampala University” and that
he “neither qualified for
admission to the degree
programme nor was he
subjected to the due process”.
However, Prof Kateregga
questioned the Council's
authority on the matter. “The
law does not require them to
recognise any degree. The duty
of National councils is to
accredit programmes, once the
programmes have been
accredited; the question of
degree awarding is the
question of university senate,”
he said.
The Constitution requires a
governor to be a degree holder.

KIAMBU SENATOR RAPED ME: BROKE MY P*SSY N POURED INSYD3!!!

Kiambu Senator fired me after he
raped me, says former househelp
Updated Friday, May 16th 2014

I will never forget July 8, 2006. It
was my third day at work as a
househelp in the Wamatangi
household. I can recall the exact
time, 1.30pm, because I wanted
to watch a programme on
television. My boss Wamatangi
came home and found his wife
with me in the sitting room.
He started quarrelling her,
demanding to know why she
didn’t go to work. I quickly
stepped out of the sitting room
and went to the kitchen. I could
hear them quarrel in English. I
could gather that mzee was not
happy. After five minutes, madam
left for work, and I was left in the
house with Wamatangi.
He then summoned me into the
living room and asked me to bring
him tea.
He asked me to sit down and
chat. I politely refused and told
him I prefer black tea since I
didn’t like milk. That was the
moment he pulled me next to him
and pushed me onto the sofa.
I started screaming and he
slapped me on the face. He then
used his hand to cover my mouth.
I think my screams must have
attracted the neighbour next door
because I heard someone knock
on the door, but they soon left.
He forcefully removed my panty
and forced himself on me. I cried
bitterly. I had never had sex. I
was a virgin. I was saved and a
staunch church member.
I don’t know how long it lasted,
but I just lay there, in pain, and
too shocked to move.
When he finished, he dragged me
to my feet and ordered me to
wash myself. I showered as he
stood by the door, looking at me,
only wearing his shirt and socks.
He warned me not to reveal what
happened to anybody. He said he
would call the police and tell
them to lock me up if I dared.
How was I to know that one
should never shower after a rape
ordeal? I dropped out of school in
class eight for lack of school fees.
My father died when I was very
young, and my mother is a
peasant farmer.
Wamatangi is a millionaire, the
richest man in my village, and has
connections with ‘big’ people. I
was too scared.
Too scared to talk
I took my shame, and hid in the
bedroom where I stayed until
madam came in the evening. I
didn’t tell madam since mzee was
also around, and I was afraid of
him.
The next day, I went and told our
neighbour, who invited madam
and told her. Madam was not
shocked. She told me there was
nothing she could do, and that
her hands were ‘tied’. The
neighbour convinced madam to
tell mzee to take me to hospital
‘ili nisafishwe.’
It took madam three days to
gather courage to ask her
husband to take me to hospital.
He agreed but when we reached
Nairobi Women’s Hospital gate, he
told us to get out of his car and
threw Sh1,200 on the ground,
warning me to never step in his
house again. He fired me right
outside the hospital gate and
sped off. After one week, my
greatest fear was confirmed. I had
missed my periods.
On April 23, 2007, I gave birth to
a baby girl at Nazareth Hospital.
It was when the baby was two
months old, that Wamatangi came
to see his daughter.
He gave me Sh7,000. He never
came to see the child again, or
offer any financial support. I went
to the children’s office at Nyayo
House where they wrote a letter to
him. After two weeks, I went back.
The gentleman at the children’s
welfare office in Nyayo House told
me they could not help me. I
didn’t lose hope and mid July
2007, I went to Fida (Federation of
Women Lawyers – Kenya). They
wrote a letter, which was delivered
to Wamatangi.
In August, I went back to Fida
and the director (she died a few
weeks back after thugs attacked
her and raped her two daughters)
told me pointblank that she could
do nothing. She then took my
papers and tore them into pieces.
She told me, “Lazima uongee
mzuri na mzee. Hakuna kitu
unaweza mfanyia (You have to be
polite with the old man. You can
do nothing to him).”
Towards the end of 2007,
Wamatangi was running for a
parliamentary seat. He came
home to my mother, and gave her
Sh20,000 promising to cater for
his daughter’s upkeep.
But he lost the elections.
Allowed me in his bazaar
He again went silent and in May
2008, I decided to visit his office
near Nyayo Stadium where he has
a car bazaar. He kept me waiting
the whole day then around 3pm,
called me to the conference room.
See Also: Senator Wamatangi
abandoned our child: Former
househelp
He summoned all his employees
and warned them to never allow
me near his office.
He threatened to fire anyone who
allowed me to his bazaar. He
hurled abuses at me as his
employees watched. I started
crying and he dragged me out
and threw me out the gate. I was
carrying my daughter who was
also crying. One employee was
touched and gave me bus fare.

Passengers required to show national IDs before boarding City Hoppa buses in Nairobi

Operators of City Hoppa buses at
the Kencom terminal now insist on
being shown identity cards before
allowing passengers to board their
buses.
This is in addition to the usual
frisking of passengers.
The bus company has hired a team
of security personnel to conduct the
checks. They are tasked with
checking luggages and using metal
detectors to screen passengers.
There is also an employee who
checks on identification documents
as passengers queue for the buses.
The security measures were
introduced on Monday is response
to the terror blasts on buses on
Thika superhighway.
According to the company’s
transport manager Gabriel Maina,
the measures are aimed at ensuring
that all passengers are in the
country legally.
“For foreigners, we are checking
their passports. For refugees, we
are requesting for the alien ID or a
letter from the Refugee
Commission,” said Mr Maina.
The company is not too strict on
those without identification
documents. Other forms of
identification allowed include work
IDs, waiting cards, driving licenses
or a student IDs.
Passengers who claim to have
forgotten their identification
documents are excused, but with a
reminder to carry them along next
time.
“Through this thorough check, we
hope to be able to identify criminal
elements and forward them to the
security officials for investigations,”
explained Mr Maina.
City Hoppa is the first bus company
in the city to introduce the new
measures.

Kidero back as Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony goes out!!!

Dr Evans Kidero: Reinstated by
Supreme Court a day after Court of
Appeal quashed his election. Prof
Paul Chepkwony: Impeached by 32
MCAs as his supporters keep away
from Chamber. Mr Ali Hassan Joho:
A Uganda higher education agency
has said his degree certificate was
a fraud.
Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony
on Wednesday became the second
county chief to be impeached as
the Supreme Court temporarily
reinstated Nairobi’s Evans Kidero
who lost a petition on Tuesday.
And in Mombasa, Governor Hassan
Joho is facing a major legal battle
after the Ugandan National Council
for Higher Education ruled that his
degree was obtained irregularly,
meaning that he could lose his
seat.
The law requires every governor to
be a university degree holder.
In Kericho, 32 MCAs voted to send
Prof Chepkwony home, barely
crossing the required threshold of
two-thirds of the assembly.
Fifteen members of the assembly,
who were against the removal of
Prof Chepkwony, did not turn up
for the debate and voting, which
was presided over by Speaker
Japheth Mutai.
In Nairobi, the Supreme Court on
Wednesday reversed Tuesday’s
nullification of Dr Kidero’s election
by the Court of Appeal. A single
judge suspended the execution of
the entire judgement of the
appellate court that had sent Dr
Kidero packing.

U THOUGHT YOU KNOW NAIROBI THAT MUCH???

Nairobi has been ranked amongst
the top five enviable and exciting
cities in the continent to live in.
The Kenyan capital is ranked as
the third liveable city to live in
amongst the listed 11 African
countries as it is “a kind and
gentle city where many
multinational companies have set
foot into for their African
operations”.
This is according to Lamudi, a
global property giant, with a
presence in 11 African countries as
well as in Mexico, Latin America,
Asia and the Middle East.
“Kenya is a country with an average
rent of only Sh602 ($7) per square
meter and, unlike other African
cities, the housing options with a
reasonable size of land are
affordable in Nairobi. Also,
apartments with swimming pool
and fitness centres can be found
frequently,” the real estate firm
said.
Tunis, in Tunisia, North Africa, was
ranked the top city to live in.
Lamuda describes it as “not very
expensive” compared to other
African capitals listed in the
survey.
Furthermore, Tunis is ranked by
the Happy Planet Index (HPI) as
the second happiest place in Africa
to live in because of the
Mediterranean Sea background and
its position as a meeting point for
all kinds of cultures.
“Living in Tunis is not very
expensive and one is able to move
around the city using the rail
network,” says Lamudi.
Ghanaian capital, Accra, ranked
overall. The appeal of this African
city is its tropical climate as well
as the fast-growing businesses by
way of new bars, restaurants,
nightclubs and shopping malls.
Rwanda’s Kigali ranked fourth due
to improving roads infrastructure
that has made commuting easy.
“Kigali is exactly the right city for
wildlife enthusiasts. The city is
built in hilly country in the centre
of Rwanda and makes large parts of
its income from safari tourism,”
says Lamudi.
Dar es Salaam was ranked as the
fifth most liveable city.

3 suspected thugs shot dead in Eldoret town

A pistol, spent bullet cartridges
and a phone of the public
recovered from three suspected
robbers shot dead by police at
Kona Mbaya of Langas Estate in
Eldoret town on March 17, 2014.
Three other suspected thugs were
shot dead today at Elgon View estate

Shocking!!! Have you ever been drugged with ‘MCHELE’? See how prostitutes and thugs do: Nairobi night clubs.

It’s common in pubs in Nairobi’s
downtown CBD… SABINA JOY,
WALLET, APPLE BEES. They prefer
canned beers/juices as it’s difficult
to notice. They are also common in
GITHURAI 45, RUIRU, JUJA, KAHAWA WENDANI, KAHAWA WEST and ZIMMERMAN. They
collude with unscrupulous medical
personnel to obtain restricted
medication for use in this vice.
The culprits are mostly young
ladies in their early 20′s. They lurk
in pubs/restaurants identifying
their targets and mostly frequent
night clubs. And the girls are
adept at their art; they’ve
perfected the practice of changing
hair/dress styles for maximum
disguise.
They mostly use a benzodiazepine
called Zolpidem(stilnox, stilnoct),
popularly known as “MCHELE”,
apparently derived from the shape
of a grain of rice. These drugs
belong to the class of drugs called
Central Nervous System
Depressants. Zolpidem is used to
treat insomnia(sleeping problems).
It belongs to the group of drugs
called central nervous system (CNS) depressants.
Once the ‘MCHELE’ is administered,
the Victim’s central nervous system slows down, grinds to a near halt;
Sense of judgement is impaired
and sleep sets in because of the
synergy with alcohol. And the next
time the victim wakes up he/she
finds himself/herself minus all
valuables and cash. Many have
experienced it but won’t say it,
fearing to appear stupid.
Have you ever fallen victim? Do you
know anyone who fell victim to
this? Do you know any pub/place/
restaurant where it happens? Do
you know any bar/restaurant where
staff/owner collude to do it? And
do you know anyone who assists
these criminals get the dangerous
drugs? Do you know any pharmacy/
clinic that dispenses such
medication illegally? Please share

Miraa producers want to be allowed to export the stimulant to China after it was banned

The Nyambene Miraa Traders
Association said the matter should
be on Kenya’s agenda during the
visit by Chinese Prime Minister Li
Keqiang.
The traders said the government
had not fulfilled its promise of
ensuring the produce was allowed
in to China. The traders’
spokesperson, Mr Kimathi Munjuri,
said they had met and agreed that
the matter should be discussed
during Mr Li’s visit, which began
on Friday.
“China is the hub of herbal
medicine and miraa has many
medicinal values,” said Mr
Munjuri.
Having lost the battle to stop the
ban in Britain, they turned to
China with hopes that its huge
population would become the next
market for the Kenyan produce, he
said.
However, attempts to have the
Kenyan embassy in Beijing and the
Chinese embassy in Nairobi to help
open the market for the stimulant
had not borne fruits five years
since a request was made, he said.
The two embassies also failed to
help clear a contradiction on the
stimulant as only khat from
Ethiopia was allowed in China
while that from Kenya was
considered a hard drug, he
claimed.

Bar Owners suffer setback on Alcoholic Act | Mututho NACADA Law 2014

The High Court in
Nakuru has thwarted a bid by a
section of Bar Owners Association to
stop implementation of the Alcoholic
drinks control Act, 2010.
The Act, which came into force on
November 22, 2010 seeks to establish
a new regulatory regime for the
manufacture, promotion, sale and
consumption of alcoholic drinks and
creates new alcohol-related offences.
Yesterday, the court ruled in favour
of National Agency for the Campaign
Against Drugs and Alcohol (Nacada)
and that the 300-metre rule from
learning institutions for persons
under 18 years will continue to be
applicable.
The legislation outlaws
establishment of bars or any
alcoholic outlets within a radius of
300 metres from learning
institutions for persons aged below
18 years among other raft of
measures.
Untold problems
Delivering the judgment, Justice
Anyara Emukule said Parliament,
having taken cognizance of the fact
that unregulated consumption of
alcoholic drinks and particularly
illicit trade in alcohol was inhibiting
the highest attainable standard of
health and reproductive health of
many Kenyans.

In the application brought against
the Minister for State and Internal
Security, Nacada and the Attorney
General, mainly from Mombasa,
Muranga, Thika, Nakuru, Kericho and
Bomet alleged that the Act infringed
on their Constitutional rights,
particularly the right to property and
the right against discrimination by
the state.
The High Court termed the
petitioner’s interpretation of the
section as unacceptable and
observed that a contrary
interpretation would cause untold
problems. The judge further ruled
that the petitioners failed to
produce evidence to show that the
District Alcoholic Drinks Regulation
Committees stipulated under the Act
could interfere with their
businesses.
Petitioners had sought orders
restraining members of the security
teams and local provincial
administration from gaining access
to their premises among other
orders.

KBL to launch Sh25 beer brand to counter illicit brews

A blinded victim of toxic brew is
strapped to his bed at the Makueni
Hospital to prevent him from
escaping. Kenya Breweries Limited
plans to introduce a low-priced
brand in the market, to counter
such brews.

Kenya: Battle for a share of the low-
end alcohol market is set to go a
notch higher. This follows plan by
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) to
introduce a low-priced brand in the
market, to counter illicit brews.
While there is a ban on spirits sold
in sachets, most of these brands
have surfaced in rural areas where
business is booming.
“We will develop an alternative brew
that will sell at Sh25 and will target
economically challenged members of
the society who will enjoy the drink
while guaranteeing their safety,”
said KBL Managing Director Joe
Muganda. He made these remarks
yesterday while addressing the
media in Nairobi. This is against the
background of the rising death toll
from illicit liquor, which reached 80
people by yesterday.
A previous attempt by KBL to enter
the low-end market has been
thwarted by a punitive tax regime,
pushing out its popular Senator Keg
beer brand out of the pubs.
KBL is lobbying for a friendly tax
bracket to allow it sell the low cost
beer, a move that will kill the illegal
chang’aa business.
