The safe period refers to the
window period where a woman is

Google and Microsoft are adding a “kill-switch” feature to their
Android and Windows phone
operating systems.
The feature is a method of making a
handset completely useless if it is
stolen, rendering a theft pointless.
Authorities have been urging tech
firms to take steps to help curb
phone theft and argued that a kill-
switch feature can help resolve the
problem.
Apple and Samsung, two of the
biggest phone makers, offer a similar
feature on some of their devices. The
move by Google and Microsoft means
that kill switches will now be a part
of the three most popular phone
operating systems in the world.
Smartphone theft has become a big
problem across the world. According
to a report by US authorities: some
3.1 million mobile devices were
stolen in the US in 2013, nearly
double the number of devices stolen
in 2012; one in three Europeans
experienced the theft or loss of a
mobile device in 2013; in South
Korea, mobile device theft increased
five-fold between 2009 and 2012;
and in Colombia, criminals stole over
one million devices in 2013.

A “hard” kill switch would render a
stolen device permanently unusable
and is favoured by legislators who
want to give stolen devices the
“value of a paperweight”. A “soft”
kill switch only make a phone
unusable to “an unauthorised user”.
Some argue that the only way to
permanently disable a phone is to
physically damage it.

RIGHT DIRECTION
Experts worry that hackers could find
a way to hijack a kill signal and turn
off phones, and if a phone is turned
off or put into aeroplane mode, it
might not receive the kill signal at
all.
Further, authorities claim that
Apple’s feature — dubbed Activation
Lock, which it introduced on all
iPhones running the iOS 7 operating
system in September last year — has
helped reduce theft substantially.
According to a report by the New
York State Attorney General, in the
first five months of 2014 the theft of
Apple devices fell by 17 per cent in
New York City. Meanwhile, iPhone
robberies fell 24 per cent in London
and 38 per cent in San Francisco in
the six months after Apple
introduced the feature, compared to
the previous six months.
“During the same period, thefts of
other popular mobile devices
increased,” the report says.
Mr Manoj Menon, managing director
of consulting firm Frost & Sullivan,
said the move was a step in the
right direction.
“[It] will go a long way in helping
authorities come one step closer to
realising a vision of zero theft of
mobile phones,” he said.

LATEST NEWS: Ex-minister Kamanya commits suicide after losing in Malawi polls

Heard of a minister committing suicide after losing an election? Perhaps, it has never happened in India. But a Malawian minister has killed himself, police say, even as results are still awaited from Tuesday's general elections. According to a BBC report, outgoing deputy Local Government Minister Godfrey Kamanya shot himself at home.
The minister's spokesman denied reports that his suicide was linked to him apparently losing his parliamentary seat. Official results have not yet been declared in what is expected to be a tight presidential race.
The BBC's Raphael Tenthani in Malawi said the electronic counting system had broken down in some areas and votes were being collated manually in these places. Mr Kamanya left a suicide note at his home in the capital, Lilongwe, asking President Joyce Banda to take care of his daughter and provide for her education.

According to a BBC report, outgoing deputy Local Government Minister Godfrey Kamanya shot himself at home.

Counting was being done manually because the electronic system was "refusing to take the information from the ground where data clerks are stationed to send the results", chief elections officer Willie Kalonga told the AFP news agency.

Google faces 'fraud' lawsuit for cancelling AdSense accounts before time

A US-based company has filed a lawsuit against Google accusing the tech giant of engaging in fraud by canceling AdSense accounts just before they were due to pay out.
AdSense is a major advertiser partner network for Google that accounts for about a quarter of Google's annual revenue.
According to CNET, the case was filed by Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro on behalf of Free Range Content, the California-based owner of Repost.us
Google's actions constitute breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, unjust enrichment, and violation of the California Unfair Competition Law, the report added.
The filing with the US District Court for the Northern District of California states that the lawsuit is trying to get class action status so that it can represent all US-based AdSense users whose accounts were disabled or terminated, the report added.

Two held over murder of albino in Tanzania, Gasuma

Two witch doctors in Tanzania
have been arrested after a woman
with albinism was hacked to death,
police said. One of her legs and
several fingers were removed in
the attack on Tuesday.
Albinos have suffered widespread
persecution in Tanzania, where
witch doctors say magic potions
made with albino body parts can
bring good luck.
Such killings have declined in
recent years, but this latest attack
has prompted a human rights
group to call for all witch doctors
to be banned.
At a press conference, the group,
Under the Same Sun, said the
current regulation of witch doctors
was clearly not working.
Currently, all witch doctors have to
apply for a certificate from the
ministry of health and welfare to
practise.
The attack occurred in the village
of Gasuma, in Simiyu province, a
remote rural area in the northwest
of the country where there have
been killings of albinos before.
TWO PEOPLE ARRESTED
The woman’s left leg, two fingers
from her left hand and a nail from
one of the thumbs were removed.
According to Under the Same Sun,
which campaigns against the
discrimination of people living with
albinism, the last killing of an
albino in Tanzania was in February
2013.
Charles Mkumbo, police chief of
the Simiyu region in northwestern
Tanzania, said a man and a
woman, Gudawa Yalema and Shiwa
Masalu, had been arrested.
In Tanzania, albinos are killed and
dismembered due to a widespread
belief that charms made from their
body parts bring good fortune and
prosperity.
‘Witch doctors tell their clients
that the skin, hair, blood and
organs of persons with albinism
when combined with their magic
potions guarantee success, wealth
and election victory,’ the group
said in a statement.

US condemns Gikomba attacks

The _United States_ on
Friday condemned twin bomb
attacks in the Kenyan capital
Nairobi blamed on Islamic
militants that killed at least 10
people and wounded at 70 more.
"The United States condemns
today's despicable terrorist
attacks," said National Security
Council spokeswoman Caitlin
Hayden.
"This is the latest in a series of
cowardly attacks on innocent
civilians in Kenya," she said,
offering thoughts and prayers to
the families of the victims.
"As we have for half a century, the
United States stands with our
Kenyan friends and partners who
continue to face adversity with
courage and resolve," Hayden
added.
"We support them in their efforts
to confront terrorism in all of its
forms."
Kenya's National Disaster
Operation Center said the first
blast occurred next to a 14-seater
public minibus while the second
was inside a shop in a market
close to Nairobi's central business
district.
Earlier this month, three people
were killed and 86 wounded in
twin bus blasts in Nairobi blamed
on Islamic militant cells
connected with Somalia's Al-
Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels. The
previous day, twin attacks left four
dead in Mombasa.

THE Latest Tanzania HIV and
Malaria indicator Survey (THMIS)
2011 to 2012 interviewed 10,967
female and 8,352 male age group
between 15-49 shows that there
are 1.4 million to 1.6 million
people living with HIV in the
country.
Speaking to his Colleagues during
the Commemorations of World
Aids Day, Acting UN Resident
Coordinator Mr. Jama Gulaid said
that HIV prevalence is 5.1 percent
and the occurrence is higher
among women than men is
estimated between 6.2 percent
versus 3.8 percent
“HIV prevalence among young
women is higher than among
young men – particularly for
youth age 23- 29 where women
are three times more likely to be
infected than men,” he said.
He added that high vulnerability
of young women to contract HIV
would require an additional
individual and national effort, to
ensure that associated structural
factors are addressed.
Gulaid said that it is also critical
to have a comprehensive sexual
reproductive education in the
communities and it’s vital that
each and every one should discuss
about HIV/Aids with their
children.
“As we are all aware, World AIDS
Day is celebrated on the 1st of
December every year for the
purpose of raising awareness
about HIV and AIDS and to
demonstrate International
Solidarity to respond to this
global pandemic,” he added.

UNAIDS Country Director, Patrick
Brenny gives his opening remarks
during the Commemoration of the
World Aids Day at Karimjee hall in
Dar es Salaam.
He noted that the global theme
for World AIDS Day from
2011-2015, as selected by the
World AIDS Campaign is ‘Getting
to Zero’ and the campaign focuses
on Zero New Infections, Zero
Stigma and Discrimination and as
a result Zero AIDS related deaths.
Gulaid underscored that the
reports from Joint United Nations
Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) as
of 2012 shows that remarkable
progress has been made over the
last decade, yet significant
challenges remain. As of 2012.
He went on to say that globally
there are 35.3 million people
living with HIV while there are
new 2.3 million HIV infections and
among those, there 960,000 new
HIV infections that prevail among
women aged 15 and above and
260,000 new HIV infections among
children below the age of 5.
“28.6million PLHIV are in need of
treatment, however only
9.7million (34 percent ) PLHIV are
accessing HIV treatment; 1.25
million Children in need of HIV
treatment did not have access;
There are 1.6million AIDS related
deaths, Furthermore reports
inform that 2 million adolescents
(10 to 19 years) are living with
HIV,” he clarified.

Beatrice Mkiramweni from the UN
Resident Coordinator’s Office
shares her experience on HIV/AIDS
to her fellow colleagues.
According to him that the report
further informs that there are
86,000 estimated new HIV
infections annually (between age
15-49years).
He explained further that the use
of Condom is very low. Only 27
percent of the interviewees were
conversant on the importance of
consistent use of both female and
male condoms, however only 8.3
percent reported using of
condoms.
“I wish to emphasize here, that, in
order to achieve the ‘Getting to
Zeroes’, it is important to practice
a “Shared Responsibility” as each
one of us has a role to play in
order to achieve “AIDS-Free
Generation.” He noted.
Gulaid noted that today more than
30 years with HIV/Aids epidemic,
the world should stop the
epidemic to continue to kill
thousands of young boys and girls
around the globe.

High Court issues arrest warrant for Journalist Walter Barasa

The High Court has issued a
warrant of arrest against journalist
Walter Barasa who will then be
handed over to the International
Criminal Court.
Mr Barasa has been accused by
Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda of
interfering with witnesses at the
ICC.
The arrest warrant was issued by
Justice Richard Mwongo
Wednesday.
In March, the High Court quashed

Nigeria's Boko Haram offers to swap kidnapped girls for prisoners, SO SAD!!!

Nigeria: The leader of the Nigerian
Islamist rebel group Boko Haram has
said he will release more than 200
schoolgirls abducted by his fighters
last month in exchange for prisoners,
according to a video seen by Agence
France-Presse on Monday.
Around 100 girls wearing full veils
and praying are shown in an
undisclosed location in the 17-
minute video in which Boko Haram
leader Abubakar Shekau speaks,
according to the French news
agency.
Militants fighting for an Islamist
state stormed a secondary school in
the northeastern village of Chibok on
April 14 and seized 276 girls who
were taking exams. Some managed
to escape but around 200 remain
missing.
The group has killed thousands
since 2009 and destabilized parts of
northeast Nigeria, the country with
Africa's largest population and
biggest economy.
The attack has provoked global
expressions of outrage, and concern
about the fate of the girls deepened
when Shekau threatened in a video
released earlier this month to sell
the girls "in the market".

Nigeria said on Saturday it had
deployed two army divisions to the
hunt for the girls while several
nations including the United States,
Britain, Israel and France have
offered assistance or sent experts.
The Nigerian government has been
sharply criticized for its response to
the abductions but President
Goodluck Jonathan said on Sunday
that international military and
intelligence assistance made him
optimistic about finding the girls.
French President Francois Hollande
on Sunday offered to host a summit
in Paris next Saturday with Nigeria
and its neighbors focused on the
militant group.
The leaders of Benin, Cameroon,
Chad and Niger might also attend
and Britain, the European Union and
the United States would probably be
represented as well, Hollande's
aides said.
The mass abduction of schoolgirls
has touched a chord around the
world, and triggered a support

Miraa producers want to be allowed to export the stimulant to China after it was banned

The Nyambene Miraa Traders
Association said the matter should
be on Kenya’s agenda during the
visit by Chinese Prime Minister Li
Keqiang.
The traders said the government
had not fulfilled its promise of
ensuring the produce was allowed
in to China. The traders’
spokesperson, Mr Kimathi Munjuri,
said they had met and agreed that
the matter should be discussed
during Mr Li’s visit, which began
on Friday.
“China is the hub of herbal
medicine and miraa has many
medicinal values,” said Mr
Munjuri.
Having lost the battle to stop the
ban in Britain, they turned to
China with hopes that its huge
population would become the next
market for the Kenyan produce, he
said.
However, attempts to have the
Kenyan embassy in Beijing and the
Chinese embassy in Nairobi to help
open the market for the stimulant
had not borne fruits five years
since a request was made, he said.
The two embassies also failed to
help clear a contradiction on the
stimulant as only khat from
Ethiopia was allowed in China
while that from Kenya was
considered a hard drug, he
claimed.
