Big blow to LUO Nyanza as EU plans to ban fish from Lake Victoria over defecation. Kisumu Lakeside

Fish
from Lake Victoria may soon be
locked out of the European Union
(EU) market due to poor hygiene,
despite Sh648 million being
allocated to clean up beaches.
The money which was donated by
the EU was to be used at fish-
landing sites along Lake Victoria
and to educate residents on
dangers of defecating in the lake.
But despite using the huge chunk
of money to educate residents on
cleanliness and good hygiene, the
fish which comes out of the lake
is contaminated.
The EU is the largest consumer of
Kenyan fish and has threatened to
ban exports from Lake Victoria
until hygiene conditions are
improved.
Fish from six beaches, Luanda
Kotieno (Rarieda), Wichlum
(Bondo), Ogal (Kisumu West)
Nyandiwa (Gwassi), Mainuga
(Karachuonyo) and Usenge
(Bondo), may be affected if the
ban is enforced.
This means the region will lose
more than Sh.6.5 billion shillings
which comes from exporting fish
to EU.
The move will also render more
than 50,000 fishermen operating
about 13,000 boats jobless.
